Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan: Two kindred souls who fought the British empire and were united in thought and deed.

Mahmud and Sita. A photographer and a student of history who wanted to make history, not merely record it.

When We Are Strangers unfolds across some of the most dramatic, and yet often forgotten, moments of the anticolonial struggle—from the streets of a Peshawar bazaar where the Khudai Khidmatgars stood unarmed before British bullets and the Garhwal Rifles laid down their arms, to Gandhi and Bacha Khan as they walked through Bengal and Bihar to suture the wounds of Partition violence – these are stories that resist the theft of a shared inheritance, and insist on the world-making capacity of individual courage and collective dreams.

Written by Vazira Zamindar and illustrated by Sarnath Banerjee, this graphic novel moves through acts of care, self-discovery, friendship and steadfast faith, so that we may yet live together again.

Vazira Fazila-Yacoobali Zamindar

Vazira Fazila-Yacoobali Zamindar is twentieth-century historian at Brown University and is most well known for The Long Partition and the Making of Modern South Asia. During long walks with Sarnath Banerjee during the pandemic, the idea for this graphic novel was seeded, and drawing on research material from her forthcoming book, Anticolonial Practice and the Image Archive, the stories for this collaborative project took shape as part of her experiments in the art of repair.
