They are here, in a borrowed land, under a borrowed sky. Not by choice, but by a cruel twist of fate.

Sangi is happy in school—primarily because of her friends. But when a refugee from Myanmar joins her class, Sangi is drawn to her—though it means jeopardizing her relationship with the only people who bring her joy.

Wadi Moe used to be happy in her old life in Mandalay. But after the military seized power and her journalist father was imprisoned, she, along with her mother and brother, was compelled to escape. They must build a new life in Mizoram, but with no resources and no legal standing.

Told in two voices, this is the searing story of two teenagers living through a time of great turbulence—with only friendship to bring hope as all else seems lost. Hannah Lalhlanpuii’s lyrical prose invites us into the lives of her characters and prompts us to examine our own souls.
