What I Learned About Investing from Darwin

The investment profession is in a state of crisis. The vast majority of equity fund managers are unable to beat the market over the long term, which has led to massive outflows from active funds to passive funds. Where should investors turn in search of a new approach?

Pulak Prasad offers a philosophy of patient long-term investing based on an unexpected source: evolutionary biology. He draws key lessons from core Darwinian concepts, mixing vivid examples from the natural world with compelling stories of good and bad investing decisions―including his own. How can bumblebees’ survival strategies help us accept that we might miss out on Tesla? What does an experiment in breeding tame foxes reveal about the traits of successful businesses? Why might a small frog’s mimicry of the croak of a larger rival shed light on the signs of corporate dishonesty?

Informed by successful evolutionary strategies, Prasad outlines his counterintuitive principles for long-term gain. He provides three mantras of investing: Avoid big risks; buy high quality at a fair price; and don’t be lazy―be very lazy. Prasad makes a persuasive case for a strategy that rules out the vast majority of investment opportunities and advocates permanently owning high-quality businesses.

Combining punchy prose and practical insight, What I Learned About Investing from Darwin reveals why evolutionary biology can help fund managers become better at their craft.

The Dawn of Life

Prabhudas Gandhi was born in 1901 in Porbandar to Chhaganlal Gandhi and Kashiben and like many members of his family, spent his childhood in South Africa at the Phoenix Ashram.

The memoir, Jeevan nu Parodh in Gujarati was serialized in a hand-written journal called Madhpudo (The Beehive) that Prabhudas edited at Sabaramati Ashram and published as a book in 1948 in the bloodied aftermath of independence. Awarded the Narmad Suvarna Chandak award, The Dawn of Life is an engaging and elaborate account of Gandhi’s imagination of swaraj, both personal and collective. It flows from the memory of a young Prabhudas who migrated to Phoenix Settlement in 1905 to join his father and uncle Maganlal Gandhi. It has a ring of innocence, which is as refreshing as it is deceptive, for the author forces the reader to look within and confront her fears, prejudices and violent impulses. Being made available to English readership after more than a century since its original inscription, the book pleads for the recovery of a dawn that has remained shrouded far too long in the pitch-dark of communalism, casteism and chauvinisms of various kinds.

Translated by Hemang Ashwinkumar, this memoir is an unique witness to the history of India and of the subcontinent.

FROM THE PLAYGROUND TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE

An inspiring, page-turning series perfect for young readers 7 to 13 years old, and for sports fans of all ages.

Born and raised in a small town, Leo K. Doyle has never seen the ocean or stepped foot on a plane. But Leo is a star soccer player with big dreams in life.

Rock-star, Olympic gold, dragon-slaying dreams.

While Leo has a pet lizard named Messi and longs to make the pros one day, he has no idea how to achieve his goal—until a professional scout pays a chance visit to one of Leo’s games and extends an invitation to try out for the London Dragons youth squad, known as The Academy.

Leo is stunned. The London Dragons isn’t just any old soccer team. It’s a world-famous English Premier League team. Soon Leo is off to a whole new country, embarking on the greatest adventure of his life. The downside? Only eleven players can make the team.

Eleven out of two hundred of the very best youth players on the planet.

Along with the grueling competition, Leo must also face a bully intent on torpedoing his summer, a roomie who doesn’t know how to have fun, a terrifying camp director, and, most of all, Leo’s own lack of formal training and the fear he’ll never succeed. By the end of the summer, Leo will become a much better player and forever changed by his experience.

But will he be good enough to make the Academy?

Stay Away from Him | A Chilling New Psychological Thriller | For fans of Freida McFadden

“Had me hooked from the first line. The characters are complex in a way that makes it impossible to tell who to trust.” ―Tasha Coryell, author of Love Letters to a Serial Killer

On the evening she met exonerated murderer Thomas Danver, Melissa Burke let him help put her five-year-old son to bed before coming back upstairs to enjoy the dinner party. Thomas was so nice, and a pediatrician. She didn’t know anything then about his wife’s suspicious death…

Relocating with her 5-year-old son to a new city after an ugly divorce, Melissa Burke isn’t looking for a new relationship right away―only distance from her ex, and space to rest and heal from the emotional scars of a broken marriage. But an unexpected relationship is exactly what she finds at a friend’s dinner party when she meets Thomas Danver, a charming widower who asks for her number at the end of the night. Intrigued, Melissa learns from her neighbors that Thomas is a dedicated father of two girls, one of the most respected pediatricians in the city―and an exonerated murderer.

Thomas’s first wife went missing three years ago, presumed dead, and Thomas was eventually cleared of her murder in an investigation that became a local media sensation. But while some still believe he killed his wife, Melissa’s friends insist that he was unfairly targeted by the police and couldn’t hurt a fly. Attracted to Thomas and also fascinated by the case, Melissa agrees to one date―and finds herself quickly swept into an obsessive, whirlwind romance.

But when Melissa receives a chilling, anonymous threat―or perhaps it’s a warning―she begins to question how much she truly knows about the man she’s falling in love with. Is he really innocent?
