Jaya: An Illustrated Retelling Of The Mahabharata condenses the entire epic, originally known as Jaya, into a tiny capsule. Other than retelling the interesting parts of the Mahabharata, what makes this book a favourite among readers is Pattanaik’s rendering of the various local folklores and tales that are associated with the epic, which have been presented in a whole new genre. मैथिल जनपद जहाँ विवाह करने की विचित्र प्रथा है, विवाह के लिए यहाँ ‘सोरठ’ का मेला लगता है, जिसमें कन्याओं के अभिभावकों द्वारा वर का चयन किया जाता है। इस उपन्यास की नायिका पार्वती भी इसी समस्या की शिकार है। उसका विवाह पैंतालीस वर्षीय चुल्हाई चौधरी से कर दिया जाता है। प्रौढ़ता के अंतिम कगार पर खड़ा यह पथिक उसको न तो मानवीय रूप से संतुष्ट कर पाता है, न शारीरिक रूप से ही।
