सूर्य गायत्री सत्यवान-सावित्री की पौराणिक कथा पर आधारित एक रोचक उपन्यास है, परंतु यह कथा पौराणिक की अपेक्षा वैज्ञानिक विश्लेषण पर आधारित है, इसलिए कहा जा सकता है कि इस पौराणिक कथा को विज्ञान की कसौटी पर कसने का प्रयास किया गया है।
विज्ञान में नित नए अनुसंधान हो रहे हैं, और वैज्ञानिक मृत्यु पर विजय पाने की भरपूर कोशिश कर रहे हैं। फिर भी दूसरी तरफ इस बात पर भला कौन विचार करने से इंकार कर सकता है कि क्या अकाल मृत्यु को रोका नहीं जा सकता?

यह उपन्यास नेताजी सुभाष चंद्र बोस के जन्म से लेकर लापता होने तक की संपूर्ण जीवनगाथा का एक ऐतिहासिक दस्तावेज़ है। इसका प्रथम संस्करण प्रकाशित होते ही यह लोकप्रियता के शिखर को छू गया था।
साल 1950 तक यह खबरें सामने आने लगीं थी कि नेता जी तपस्वी बन गए हैं। लेकिन कुछ रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, जब मित्सुबिशी के-21 बमवर्षक विमान, जिस पर नेताजी सवार थे, वह 18 अगस्त 1945 को क्रैश हो गया था। हालाँकि इस बात का कोई पुख्ता सबूत नहीं है कि बोस की मृत्यु कब हुई थी। ऐसे ही कुछ सवालों से पर्दा उठाने का कार्य इस उपन्यास में किया गया है।

इस उपन्यास में निम्न मध्यवर्ग की उत्पीड़ित नारी का दुख-दर्द उकेरा गया है। इस उपन्यास में स्त्री-पुरुष के रिश्ते को आत्मा की सघन गहराइयों से माप लेने का द्वंद्व नहीं है, बल्कि सहज ही स्वीकार कर लेने का भाव है। इसमें शेखर, ललिता और गिरीन्द्र के बीच प्रेम के रिश्ते बदलने की एक अद्भुत एवं मार्मिक दास्तान उकेरी गई है। इस कारण यह गूढ़ प्रेम की एक अमर कृति मानी जाती है।

मधुशाला में एक सौ पैंतीस रूबाइयाँ (यानी चार पंक्तियों वाली कविताएँ) हैं।
मधुशाला की हर रूबाई मधुशाला शब्द से समाप्त होती है। हरिवंश राय बच्चन ने मधु, मदिरा, हाला (शराब), साकी (शराब पड़ोसने वाली), प्याला (कप या ग्लास), मधुशाला और मदिरालय की मदद से जीवन की जटिलताओं के विश्लेषण का प्रयास किया है। मधुशाला जब पहली बार 1935 में प्रकाशित हुई तो शराब की प्रशंसा के लिए कई लोगों ने उनकी आलोचना की। लेकिन गांधी जी ने इसकी प्रशंसा की।
