Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was a 19th-century English novelist and social critic, best known for his fictional characters. In 1836, Dickens published his first novel The Pickwick Papers which was an instant success and it made him a household name. He went on to write many other famous works including Oliver Twist, A Tale of Twist Two Cities, and Great Expectations. His writings often dealt with social issues including poverty, class, and capitalism, and he was a vocal critic of the Victorian establishment.
