Mukunda Rao

Mukunda Rao is a philosopher, biographer, playwright, and fiction writer whose works have been published by HarperCollins India, Penguin Random House India, and Hachette India—three of the most distinguished publishing houses in the Indian subcontinent. A professor of English for more than three decades, he is one of India’s foremost interpreters of U. G. Krishnamurti, J. Krishnamurti, and the Indian non-dual tradition, bringing together philosophy, literature, spirituality, and lived inquiry with rare depth and clarity.

He is the author of more than a dozen books spanning philosophy, spiritual biography, and fiction. His acclaimed work, The Biology of Enlightenment, an exploration of U. G. Krishnamurti’s radical encounter with the ‘natural state’, has attained cult status among spiritual seekers worldwide for its daring, unconventional insights into consciousness and transformation.

Mukunda Rao’s dramatic works, such as Mahatma: Khuda ka Hijra and Baba Saheb Ambedkar, have been widely staged across Karnataka, earning critical and popular acclaim. His philosophical writings — including The Buddha, The Other Side of Belief, Belief and Beyond, Sky-clad, and India’s Greatest Minds — continue to engage seekers, scholars, and readers of Indian thought worldwide.

Blending intellectual rigour with literary sensitivity, his work moves beyond conventional spiritual discourse into a deeper exploration of consciousness, freedom, and the human condition. He lives with his wife on a farm on the outskirts of Bengaluru and can be contacted at mukunda53@gmail.com.
