मोहन राकेश नई कहानी आन्दोलन के सशक्त हस्ताक्षर थे। पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय से आपने हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी में एम. ए. किया और फिर जीविकोपार्जन के लिए अध्यापन से जुड़े। कुछ सालों तक आपने सारिका के संपादक किया। आषाढ़ का एक दिन,आधे अधूरे और लहरों के राजहंस आपकी प्रसिद्ध रचनाएं हैं। आप संगीत नाटक अकादमी से सम्मानित लेखक हैं। मोहन राकेश की डायरी हिंदी में इस विधा की सबसे सुंदर कृतियों में एक मानी जाती है। 

निर्मल वर्मा का जन्म 3 अप्रैल 1929 को शिमला में हुआ था। हिन्दी साहित्य में नई कहानी आंदोलन के प्रमुख ध्वजवाहक निर्मल वर्मा का कहानी में आधुनिकता का बोध लाने वाले कहानीकारों में अग्रणी स्थान है। रात का रिपोर्टर, एक चिथड़ा सुख, लाल टीन की छत और वे दिन निर्मल वर्मा के चर्चित उपन्यास हैं। उनका अंतिम उपन्यास अंतिम अरण्य 1990 में प्रकाशित हुआ था। उनकी सौ से अधिक कहानियाँ कई कहानी संग्रहों में प्रकाशित हुई।निर्मल वर्मा का निधन 25 अक्टूबर 2005 को नई दिल्ली में हुआ।
