The Communist Manifesto

On the occasion of Karl Marx’s 200th birth anniversary, here is an authoritative edition of The Communist Manifesto

‘Apart from Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species,’ notes the Los Angeles Times, The Communist Manifesto ‘is arguably the most important work of nonfiction written in the 19th century.’ The Washington Post calls Marx ‘an astute critic of capitalism.’ Writing in The New York Times, Columbia University Professor Steven Marcus describes the Manifesto as a ‘masterpiece’ with ‘enduring insights into social existence.’

Since it was first written in 1848, the Manifesto by Marx and Engels has been translated into more languages than any other modern text. It has been banned, censored, burned and declared ‘dead’. But year after year, the text only grows more influential and more relevant, and is required reading in courses on philosophy, politics, economics and history.

In this extensively researched edition, renowned Marxist scholar Phil Gasper provides an authoritative introduction to history’s most important political document, with the full text of the Manifesto. Thoughtfully presented in a reader-friendly format, it is fully annotated, with clear historical references and explanations, additional related texts, and a glossary that will bring the text to life for students as well as the general reader.

The New Yorker recently described Karl Marx as ‘The Next Thinker’ for our era. This book shows readers why.

A Hero in the Chair beside me

A gifted boy from a small town in newly independent India dreams of making a life in the big city in the 1950s. Suddenly, misfortune and tragedy beset his family, to which he is dearly attached. As responsibilities fall on his twelve-year old shoulders, he chooses his family’s welfare over himself. He does not spare himself as he devotes his energy, attention, focus and time to the two priorities in his life: his family and his ambitions, in that order. Accolades and rewards begin to flow in early, followed by recognition, status and prosperity.

Devoted and indebted to his mother, whom he regards as a power-endowed ascetic, Girish Mohan Gupta continues to uphold the family and service to humanity as his highest values. Slowly, he moves from childhood, to his young adult years and then to a full-blooded householder’s life, supporting ever-increasing family responsibilities, with an eye on philanthropy.
This thought-provoking account by Dr Gupta’s daughter points to how success can be achieved, living life with dignity and honesty, and not giving in to despair in the face of great odds.

Debt

Must we always repay our debts?
Wasn’t money invented to replace ancient barter systems?

Apparently not, according to Yale-bred anthropologist David Graeber.
In a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom, Graeber radically challenges our understanding of debt. He illustrates how, for more than 5000 years—long before the invention of coins or bills—there existed debtors and creditors who used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods. He argues that Madagascar was held to be indebted to France because France invaded it, reminds us that texts from Vedic India included God in credit systems and shows how the dollar changed European society forever in the sixteenth century. He also brilliantly demonstrates how words like ‘guilt’, ‘sin’ and ‘redemption’ derive in large part from ancient debates about debt, and shape even our most basic ideas of right and wrong.

Debt: The First 5000 Years is a fascinating chronicle of this little known history—of how it has defined the evolution of human society, and what it means for the credit crisis of the present day and the future of our economy.
