Milee Ashwarya, publisher, Ebury Publishing and Vintage Publishing, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘The pandemic has brought several learnings, and it has forced us to slow down, look around and ponder. Penguin to publish three new titles by bestselling historian Vikram Sampath

New Delhi, 10 September 2020: Penguin Random House India announces the acquisition of three new titles by award-winning author and historian Vikram Sampath. These new titles will be published under the Penguin Viking imprint from 2022 onwards.

Author Vikram Sampath, commenting on his experience of writing these new books, says, ‘Working with Penguin and its motivated team has been extremely refreshing and rewarding. I am delighted that I’m deepening this bond with Penguin through a series of three forthcoming books that I have signed up with them, in addition to the second volume on Savarkar that I’m trying to wrap up. Given the huge demand for non-fiction today, it’s perhaps never been a better time in India to be a historian and to tell these compelling stories of our past in a manner that interests, excites and inspires.’

The three titles will explore the stories of important and contested figures of our past who continue to define contemporary notions of nationhood and secularism. Like his earlier work on Savarkar, these books will also be meticulously researched and unbiased accounts that assess these legacies in an objective manner. They would be drawing from a wide range of rich sources from across India and abroad.

Among the books in the series is a biography of the 18th Century ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan. He is a historian’s enigma and his stormy life has been the subject of much debate on all sides of the ideological spectrum. A reassessment of his life and legacy is hence an important addition to our historiography.

Vikram would also be revisiting the legacy of the famed Maratha ruler of the 17th Century in his book titled Chhatrapati: The Life and Times of Shivaji Bhosale. In the midst of an oceanic amount of literature on the legend of Shivaji, here is a book that will survey all the different versions of his life and bring them together as a comprehensive and compelling story of this inspiring genius.

Another book tentatively titled Unsung Tales from Indian History will seek to expand the scope of our historical narrative to dynasties, heroes and heroines beyond the microscope of Delhi. It will open a window to contributions of leaders like Chand Bibi of Ahmednagar, who defeated Akbar’s armies in 1595; Lachit Borphukan, who led the armies of the Ahom Dynasty and defeated the Mughals in the Battle of Saraighat; the story of Tikendrajit Singh, the commander of the Manipuri army, who valiantly fought the Anglo-Manipur War, and many more stories, which have largely remained untold for a long time.

Premanka Goswami, Executive Editor at Penguin Random House India, says, ‘Vikram Sampath is a brilliant historian. Time and again, his works have fascinated us and expanded our viewpoints. We are thrilled to work with Vikram on these three new books that will open a window to understanding Chhatrapati Shivaji and Tipu Sultan, and showcase the many tales of valour from our rich past.’

Meru Gokhale, Publisher, Penguin Press, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘Vikram Sampath is a gifted author and it is wonderful to see how well readers have engaged with his books. We are extremely excited to have signed up Vikram for three new books that will offer important new insights into Indian history.’

About the author:

Dr Vikram Sampath is a Bangalore-based historian and the author of four acclaimed works of non-fiction, including the national bestseller Savarkar: Echoes from a Forgotten Past. Vikram’s work on Gauhar Jaan won him Sahitya Akademi’s first Yuva Puraskar for English literature in 2012 and the ARSC International Award for Excellence in Historical Research in New York in 2011. A research fellow with numerous organizations and a visiting faculty at several universities in India and abroad, Vikram is also a musician, archivist, festival curator and a regular columnist with several dailies and news portals.

The new book cover revealed on her 70th birthday

New Delhi, 19 August 2020; Penguin Random House India marks the 70th birthday of India most beloved writer Sudha Murty with the announcement of her new book. The publishing house is coming out with her latest collection of short stories, titled ‘Grandparents’ Bag of Stories’, which is scheduled to be released in November 2020.

Grandparents’ Bag of Stories is a sequel to bestselling Grandma’s Bag of Stories (approx. three lakh copies sold) and will feature 20 stories by Sudha Murty, in her inimitable style. Mrs Murty was inspired to pen these stories with the aim to entertain children as many of them find themselves homebound during these days, without school and holiday plans. Narrated in the voice of grandparents, who epitomise storytelling in our childhood, these tales of kings and jungle, fun and adventure in the time of coronavirus are all wrapped in wonderful and important lessons of life.

Commenting on the inspiration of writing during the lockdown, Mrs Sudha Murty says, ‘The lockdown due to the pandemic got me wondering what I would have done as a 10-12 year old kid. I would have really got bored. I would have gone to my grandparents’ house, sat with them, heard stories, and learnt how to help people in difficult times. So, I thought – why can’t I once again become a ten year old, think of all my childhood stories and write a book. That’s how I wrote these set of stories.’

Ahead of the release of the book, the publishing house is launching an exciting campaign and revealing the first look of the cover of her upcoming book to celebrate Mrs Murty’s birthday. Young readers are in for a treat on social media, with a special message from the iconic author and much more content that is engaging on Penguinsters, Penguin’s dedicated page for our young and blossoming readers.

Sohini Mitra, Publisher, Children’s Division, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘Mrs Murty’s written work has truly enriched children’s reading repertoire. Her stories, in addition to being enjoyable, always have a valuable life lesson for her readers. We are privileged to publish her books and for the opportunity to share it with this growing generation of readers. She wrote this new book during the lockdown and even in these strange and trying times, it is admirable that she has come up with, yet again, a wonderful range of stories that can fill our hearts, make us smile and fire up our imaginations. After all, what better way to seek comfort and joy other than the magic of stories? I am excited to see the readers’ reaction to Grandparents’ Bag of Stories.’

Penguin Random House India to publish an international anthology of poems

A collection written under the lockdown to inspire, and to encourage optimism and empathy

New Delhi, 16 July 2020: With the world facing strange and unprecedented times, here is a book of poetry on the challenges we have been facing in the throes of the pandemic. Titled Singing in the Dark, it will be published by Penguin Random House India (PRHI) under the Vintage imprint later this year.

Edited by K. Satchidanandan and Nishi Chawla, Singing in the Dark will reflect the mood of these times, when the coronavirus pandemic has dramatically altered our lives. The collection will include works by over a hundred poets from across six continents writing in twenty languages. The poems capture the anxiety and agitation of isolation, the unparalleled joys of witnessing the revival of nature, the cruel realities of an inequitable world, besides reflecting on the impermanence of life. With contributions by Vijay Seshadri, Grace Cavalieri, Arundhati Subramaniam, George Szirtes, Chandrakant Patil, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Anamika, Francis Combes, Rafael Soler, Jerry Pinto, Jotamario Arbeláez, Sankara Pillai, Asmaa Azaizeh, Manohar Shetty, Keki Daruwalla, Amanda Bell, Ashok Vajpayee, and many more, Singing in the Dark will offer an invaluable poetic record of these strange times.

  1. Satchidanandan says about the book, ‘This anthology had a humble beginning with a few poets from the US and India but gradually evolved into an intercontinental collection of poetic responses to the diverse aspects of the pandemic—from the trauma of solitude to the unexpected transformation in the expression of human relationships and the new visibility of the class divide to the marvellous revival of nature with the return of birds and butterflies filling up the arid cityscapes with colours and songs, and the ultimate realization of the transience of human existence. The moods vary from quiet contemplation and choking anguish to suppressed rage and careful celebration. Consisting of poems of recall, experience and dream, this book has evolved into a virtual aesthetic archive of these strange times for generations to come.’

Commenting on the acquisition of this unique collection, Milee Ashwarya, publisher, Ebury Publishing & Vintage Publishing (PRHI), says, ‘Singing in the Dark, edited by K. Satchidanandan and Nishi Chawla, is a collection of poems from across the globe addressing the challenges faced by mankind in the wake of the pandemic. The timely offering captures the myriad voices and reflects upon the new normal. I am delighted and proud at the acquisition and looking forward to publishing it.’

Elizabeth Kuruvilla, executive editor, Ebury Publishing & Vintage Publishing (PRHI), who commissioned the book, sheds more light on what the readers should expect. ‘For those of us bearing witness to these unprecedented times, the world has never been stranger. No country, be it big or small, has been spared the fear of the annihilation of a vast number of its population by a strangely beautiful-looking virus. If there is a sense of the world facing a common enemy together for the first time, never before has the window pane that separates the haves from the have-nots been more visible, or the individual bubbles we’ve built around ourselves felt more confining. As we cling to life and try to recreate a sense of normality, we swing between moments of anxiety, creativity, loneliness and warm fellowship. It is only poetry that we can turn to in order to excavate the profound imprint that this new world will leave on our minds. Singing in the Dark is a powerful poetic testimony to this moment and will be read by generations to come.’

Penguin Random House India to publish Sonu Sood’s debut book about his extraordinary migrant rescue missions

New Delhi, 15 July 2020: In the wake of the world’s largest COVID-19 lockdown, India witnessed one of the biggest migrant crises to ever hit the country. Lakhs of migrant workers were stranded in big cities, with no means of returning to their villages and hometowns. Amid all this, actor Sonu Sood took the responsibility of giving many such people a safe passage back home. While his work still continues, he has been recording his extraordinary experiences and is going to write a book about this ‘life-changing’ journey.

Penguin Random House India has signed actor Sonu Sood for his debut book, which is inspired by his rescue missions. This as-of-yet untitled book will be released later in the year under the Ebury Press imprint.

Sonu Sood is one of the most popular actors in Bollywood who successfully crossed over to regional cinema and has several blockbuster hits to his credit. His debut book, written in the first person, will reveal the emotional and often challenging journeys he undertook along with the people he rescued. He will narrate the many stories he heard and the interactions he had, and will also share how this experience not only changed his outlook but also his life’s purpose.

Going above and beyond his professional capacity, Sonu launched an initiative to help reunite migrant workers who were stranded in Mumbai with their families in distant corners of the country. Personally financing the modes of travel and working around the logistical challenges of state border restrictions, Sonu and his team rolled out a toll-free number and a WhatsApp helpline to connect with and then arrange transportation for those desperately seeking a way out, other than walking back to their villages.

Commenting on his upcoming book, Sonu Sood says, ‘The past three and half  months have been a kind of a life-changing experience for me, living with the migrants for sixteen to eighteen hours a day and sharing the pain. When I go to see them off as they begin their journey back home, my heart is filled with joy and relief. Seeing the smiles on their faces, the tears of happiness in their eyes has been the most special experience of my life, and I pledged that I’ll keep on working to send them back to their homes until the last migrant reaches his village, to his loved ones.’

He goes on to add, ‘I believe I came to this city for this—and this was my purpose. I want to thank god for making me a catalyst in helping the migrants. While my heart beats in Mumbai, after this movement I feel a part of me lives in the villages of UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Uttarakhand and various other states where I have now found new friends and made deep connections. I have decided to put these experiences, stories that are embedded in my soul forever, in a book, and I’m very delighted that Penguin Random House is publishing it. I want you to be a part of this journey, so that we can share these special stories and make them immortal. I’m excited, nervous and overwhelmed, and I can’t wait to connect with you through my book. I look forward to your support—and love you all.’

Milee Ashwarya, publisher, Ebury Publishing and Vintage Publishing, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘While most of us in our lifetimes wish to work to help others in need, only a few actually make it our life’s mission. Sonu Sood is one such person. For the past two months, he has been spending most of his time and resources in helping the migrants find their way back home. He is there with them, standing shoulder to shoulder, sharing their pain and giving them hope. The book will bring together the story of this amazing journey—of people who were suddenly left without security and livelihood; of hope and the feeling of oneness that binds us all together. I am grateful that Sonu is sharing these stories in a book, and I am proud to publish it.’

About the author

Sonu Sood is an Indian actor and film producer. He has featured in Bollywood hits like Dabangg, Jodhaa Akbar and Shootout at Wadala, and in the Telugu blockbuster Arundhati, among others. He is known for his immaculately executed negative roles and has even received a Nandi Award for ‘Best Villain’, an Apsara Award for ‘Best Actor in a Negative Role’ and an IIFA Award for ‘Best Performance in a Negative Role’.
