Penguin publishes truth about India and Pakistan with Huma Ijaz Zaman and Hindol Sengupta

A no holds barred political dialogue between two friends, two citizens, from India and Pakistan

New Delhi, 9 May 2019: Penguin Random House India announces the acquisition of a one-of-a-kind, sociocultural and political narrative on India and Pakistan. Titled The Truth About Neighbours, this book has been co-authored by award-winning author, historian and journalist Hindol Sengupta and Huma Ijaz Zaman, one of Pakistan’s most high-profile corporate, gender rights and public interest specialist lawyers, and will release worldwide later in 2019.

Written in epistolary form, this book will provide a contemporary understanding of India and Pakistan and their thoughts about one another, written together by an Indian and a Pakistani who both happen to be Chevening scholars. Beginning the discussion with the same set pattern of repeating clichés about a common love for food, cricket and Bollywood, the authors will take the readers beyond what they see as the superficiality of a lot of people-to-people dialogue.

Co-author of the book Huma Ijaz Zaman says, ‘The Truth About Neighbours explores a people-to-people narrative rather than the narrative the governments are putting forward, which clearly has not worked for both nations. It is my belief that both governments should hear what their people say and steer their policy towards a neighbourly cordial approach rather than face being on the brink of war every few years. We thought that where in the past there have been collaborations of journalists, legal forums, actors and film-makers between India and Pakistan, it was time for the authors to collaborate on a book, an endeavour, to make governments think about changing the narrative as the old narrative is clearly not leading to solutions. This book hopefully can influence governments, based on positives, to take into account a different scheme for finding resolutions to decades-old conflict between two old neighbours and at least have a functional relationship.’

Echoing Huma’s point of view, Hindol Sengupta says, ‘This book is a culmination of a decade-long discussion on politics between Huma and me. We always wanted to do a book together that looks at the difficult India–Pakistan relationship beyond platitudes. It often seems that the India–Pakistan conversation is trapped in misplaced advertisement-like exuberance or hate propaganda. We want to break free from this dichotomy in this book and create the atmosphere and knowledge among the public about how a realistic peace can be achieved between the two countries. This is a book not only about what Indians and Pakistanis might love about one another, or hate, but by putting these emotions and information side by side, and neglecting neither, we hope for a sane and sensible relationship between the nuclear-armed neighbours.’

This book is designed to talk about all the things Indians and Pakistanis avoid talking to one another about. It will challenge readers to answer some poignant questions: Can Indians and Pakistanis talk to each other openly and without caution about the difficult, even dangerous, subjects? Can they go beyond the brief outlines of the history textbooks? Can they be honest about their historical icons? What they hate about each other—and not just love? Can they talk about what people-to-people contact can and cannot do? Can they talk honestly about religion and their respective fears about it? As well as talking about what is common, can they talk about what separates them? Can they show each other the mirror?

Milee Ashwarya, Publisher, Ebury Publishing and Vintage Publishing, Penguin Random House India says, ‘The Truth About Neighbours will be a unique book about India and Pakistan written by an Indian and a Pakistani author together and I am proud to have it on our list. Conversational, honest and pragmatic in its approach, I hope it will be a catalyst for more open dialogue between the people of the two countries who have been intertwined by history, geography and geo-politics, and help find a way forward for a better future. I am delighted that Hindol and Huma have chosen to embark on this journey together and I hope the book is read widely by readers both in India and Pakistan.’

Priya Doraswamy from Lotus Lane Literary says, ‘A first-of-its-kind book, written by two brilliant minds, Hindol Sengupta and Huma Ijaz, it is a no-holds-barred political dialogue between two friends, two citizens, from India and Pakistan, discussing how peace can be achieved with “real talk” between contentious neighbours. Steering clear of political soap-boxing and rhetoric, the epistolary book shows how difficult conversations can be successful when written with compassion and with a common goal of peace. I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of this project, and pleased that Milee Ashwarya and the Penguin Random House India team will be publishing worldwide in 2019.’

Shuja Nawaz’s new book The Battle for Pakistan to be published by Penguin

New Delhi, 25 April 2019: Penguin Random House India announces the acquisition of an authoritative and analytical take on Pakistan’s relationship with its neighbours and the United States. Titled The Battle For Pakistan: The Bitter US Friendship and a Tough Neighborhood, this book is written by Shuja Nawaz, an author and a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center in Washington. It will be published under the Vintage imprint and will release in August 2019. This is Nawaz’s second book on the topic since 2009.

The Battle for Pakistan is about the complex relationship the country has shared with the USA and its neighbours, namely, Afghanistan and India. Based on the author’s deep and first-hand knowledge of the region and the US and his numerous interactions and interviews with leading civil and military actors, coupled with his access to key documentation, this book helps understand the US–Pakistan misalliance since 2008. It identifies the potential dangers for a critical region of the world and offers suggestions for both countries to create better policies that will benefit both of them and South Asia in general.

Shuja Nawaz, author of The Battle For Pakistan: The Bitter US Friendship and a Tough Neighborhood

Shuja Nawaz has played an active role in advising civil and military leaders in his native Pakistan and his adopted homeland of the United States in the past decade or so. He has been on the front line of the battle for Pakistan as well as the fraught US relationship, looking for answers to difficult questions. Commenting on his new book, he says, ‘I am delighted and honoured to join Penguin Random House’s superb list of authors to share my new book with a wide South Asian audience. South Asia has the potential to become a fulcrum for global growth and stability—only if its leadership learns to create a connected neighbourhood. The United States could play a critical role in this process, if it chooses to do so. Not just to counter real and imagined threats from the Asian neighbours of India and Pakistan, but also to benefit from the political and economic advantages of the world’s largest potential market for its goods and services. I refuse to be pessimistic about this. The hardworking youth and broad population of South Asia deserve much better. Learning from our history may help us reshape our future.’

Answering some critical questions—Why can’t Pakistan and the United States trust each other? Will the US abandon Afghanistan yet again, leaving a mess for Pakistan to deal with? Why can’t the US help India, Pakistan and Afghanistan learn to live and grow together?—this book examines these and other centrifugal and centripetal issues in The Battle for Pakistan.

Milee Ashwarya, Publisher, Ebury Publishing and Vintage Publishing, Penguin Random House India says, ‘The Battle For Pakistan: The Bitter US Friendship and a Tough Neighborhood is an authoritative, well-researched and insightful book on Pakistan and its place in the world in the light of the ever changing global power politics. It is a must read for anybody interested in international relations, politics, diplomacy, current affairs and South Asia. I am delighted that Shuja has written this timely and important book, and that we are able to publish it. This will be a very special addition to our list.’

Priya Doraswamy from Lotus Lane Literary comments, ‘It’s not every day that an agent gets to work with an author who’s not only great as a writer and a thinker but is also prescient.  Shuja Nawaz’s brilliant narrative The Battle For Pakistan: The Bitter US Friendship and a Tough Neighborhood, is a wakeup call to the world at large, and should be compulsory reading to anyone who’s interested in the future of South Asian geopolitics.  I am honored to represent Shuja Nawaz and delighted that Milee Ashwarya and team at Penguin Random House India, will be publishing this fine book for the Subcontinent.’

Gautam Chintamani writes the exclusive biography of veteran politician Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, 10 April 2019: Penguin Random House India announces the acquisition of film historian and author Gautam Chintamani’s first political biography called Rajneeti. This is the first exclusive memoir of veteran politician Rajnath Singh. The book is due to release in May 2019 and is already available for pre-order on e-commerce websites.

A gripping tell-all about one of the tallest politicians in present-day India, the author chronicles Rajnath Singh’s career spanning nearly fifty years, during which he played a significant role in shaping the history of this country. Drawing from a vast amount of research and in-depth interviews, Chintamani’s engaging narrative reveals, for the first time, a politician who never shied away from doing the right thing.

Rajnath Singh rose from being a humble swayamsevak in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, and even served as a cabinet minister in the Vajpayee government. Jailed during the Emergency, Singh was the president of the BJP’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. A two-term president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Singh witnessed the elevation of Narendra Modi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate and delivered BJP’s biggest election victory in 2014. Since then, as India’s home minister, he has ushered in a new phase in the country’s security where both internal and external threats have been minimized. Under Singh, the threats from Naxalites and Maoists have significantly decreased and the state of Jammu and Kashmir saw its first local body elections in over a decade.

Milee Ashwarya, Publisher, Ebury Publishing and Vintage Publishing, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘In the current political landscape there are only a handful of politicians who have grown from the grassroots and have made their way to the top echelons of power on the basis of their hard work, grit and determination. Rajnath Singh is one of them. The son of a farmer, he has spent decades in diverse roles and is universally respected for who he is. I am delighted that we will be publishing his biography and am equally pleased that Gautam Chintamani will be writing it. In Gautam, we have found the perfect author to present a dispassionate and riveting account of one of India’s most inspiring and intriguing political leaders’.

Gautam Chintamani says, ‘Like most of India’s present political dispensation, Rajnath Singh, too, emerged post-Emergency, the twenty-one-month period between June 1975 and March 1977, often described as the darkest phase in independent India’s history. Yet Singh stands apart from many of his contemporaries as he continues to remain committed to the ideals of social justice, political equality and civil liberty. In a career spanning fifty years, Singh has come to embody a certain standard in public life where principles do not change with prevailing circumstances, and he strives to constantly mend bridges as well as find common ground across party lines. What propelled me to write this book was the desire to tell the story of a politician, who, unlike most other politicians, never shied away from doing the right thing, irrespective of the opposition. As a biographer, in Rajnath Singh’s life, I found a rare instance of a politician in contemporary India who has traversed the entire spectrum of the political journey. In this odyssey, Singh has both witnessed and played a significant role in shaping the history of India. A naturally pragmatic person who rarely dwells in the past, Singh’s life also offers the younger generations great insight into the struggles undertaken by men and women to deliver on the promise of making India a world leader’.

Gautam Chintamani is a film historian and an author of bestselling books, who hails from a literary tradition that runs deep on both sides of his family—the late Telugu poet Arudra is his maternal grandfather and the liberal thinker Sir C.Y. Chintamani is his paternal great-grandfather. Gautam’s documentary film SRI: Challenging Traditions, Transforming Lives won the Best Documentary Award at the Asia Pacific Rice Film Festival, Malaysia. His trilogy, Janam–Aagazh–Parvaaz, on the journey of children with special needs and their parents was screened at the 2011 International Film Festival of India (IFFI). His notable television credits include Siddhanth, a law series, which garnered an Emmy nomination in the ‘international drama’ category—a first for an Indian television show.

Hindol Sengupta’s the Man Who Saved India to be adapted into a film

New Delhi, 11 March 2018. The makers of Gangs of Wasseypur and Tanu Weds Manu, Sunil Bohra and Shailesh R. Singh, collaborate with India’s largest English-language trade publisher, Penguin Random House India, for a mega web series—The Man Who Saved India—based on internationally acclaimed author Hindol Sengupta’s book.

Sunil Bohra (Bohra Bros) and Shailesh R. Singh (Karam Media), who produced Tanu Weds Manu and are currently making Mental Hai Kya and Jabariya Jodi, are now gearing up to make the biopic of the Iron Man, Sardar Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister of India, based on the book The Man Who Saved India published by Penguin.

‘I am most pleased that the filming rights to The Man Who Saved India have been bought by Sunil Bohra. Sunil has the vision, the tenacity and the instinctive understanding of how to bring Sardar Patel’s story to life. The phrase larger than life is a cliché, but like all clichés, there are moments when it is true. And this is one of them. This is one such story which is truly larger than life, and I believe that Sunil is the right person to give this story the visual mounting and the distribution muscle that it requires so that it can enthral a new generation around the world, just as the story of Gandhi once did. Sardar Patel worked and spoke extensively with youth all his life. He was one of the first in the Congress Party at that time who saw what a futile and borrowed idea the Right versus Left debate among the youth in India was and propelled the youth on the far more urgent task of building the nation after colonial rule,’ says the author, Hindol Sengupta.

Milee Ashwarya, publisher, Ebury Publishing and Vintage Publishing, says, ‘I am delighted that The Man Who Saved India by Hindol Sengupta is being made into a film, and the character, personality and contribution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel will be available to a wider audience through the medium of cinema. Many congratulations to Hindol and Sunil Bohra for taking on this brilliant initiative.’

The web series will trace the journey of Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel towards becoming one of the tallest leaders of the Indian polity—an ordinary young lad from Gujarat with skeletal education going on to ace one of the toughest law exams in the United Kingdom, returning to India and practising at Godhra. He quit his job on the call of Mahatma Gandhi and joined the Indian freedom struggle, earning the title of ‘Sardar’ from the father of the nation himself.

‘I was always mesmerized by the persona of Sardar Patel and his contribution of merging the princely states into the union of India. I hail from Jodhpur and can hence relate to it better than anyone else,’ says producer, Sunil Bohra. Sunil also says that Hindol Sengupta’s book encompasses all the facets of Sardar Patel’s persona, hence we have decided to stay as close to the book as possible.

The book brings to light certain facts that are bound to raise pointed questions and incite heated discussions about political and historical developments that have been kept under cover by vested interests. Just for the start –

In 1946, thirteen of the sixteen states elected Sardar Patel as the President. This means he was more popular than Nehru and would have been the natural choice for PM in 1947, but on Mahatma Gandhi’s request, Sardar Patel made way for Nehru. It was Sardar Patel who should be credited for merging 500 princely states into modern India. It is due to him that India’s map looks like what it is today.

Sardar Patel also did not get along well with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the two had a long history of quarrels on many issues. Sardar Patel and Nehru were at loggerheads almost all the time; Sardar was close to Maharaja Hari Singh, while Nehru was great friends with Sheikh Abdullah, and that sums it all up for us. ‘Lamhon ne khata ki, umron ne saza payee’ seems to have been written for the Kashmir dispute being discussed at the United Nations. Sardar Patel was not at all in favour of taking the Kashmir dispute to the UN; it was Nehru who insisted, and the rest, as they say, is history. The bubonic plague that affected about 12 million people in India and China in the 1930s could not force Sardar out of his homeland, Gujarat.

Sardar lost his wife, Jhaverba, to cancer when he was just thirty-three years old. But he did not remarry, nor have we heard of any scandalous stories or romantic rendezvous concerning him. This goes on to show that Sardar was not only loving but a loyal husband too. The Iron Man, as he was often called, survived a massive heart attack in 1948. But death got the better of him two years later when he passed away at the age of seventy-five due to natural causes. It is said that he spent his last days on the bed cracking jokes. For his contribution to the nation he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1991, but a statue that befits him and his stature was erected twenty-seven years later.

Beloved Author Krishna Sobti Passes Away

It is with deep regret that we receive the news of Krishna Sobti’s passing. She was one of the most iconic writers of her generation, full of immeasurable wit and possessing an immense sense of humour. She won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1980 for her novel Zindaginama, and in 1996 was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, the highest award of the Akademi. In 2017, she received the Jnanpith Award for her contribution to Indian literature.

Her editor Ambar Sahil Chatterjee remembers: ‘When I last visited her, Krishna Sobti expressly mentioned how excited she was about the publication of the English translation of her latest novel A Gujarat Here, A Gujarat There (originally Gujarat Pakistan Se Gujarat Hindustan) in time for her 94th birthday next month. It saddens us all that she did not live to see this happen. The novel, drawn heavily from Sobti’s own experiences as a refugee in the aftermath of Partition, is regarded as the crowning achievement of an already illustrious literary career. We wish to pay our respects to a firebrand who always lived life on her own terms.’

Cover and title of new Novel from Thomas Harris revealed

From the creator of Hannibal Lecter and The Silence of the Lambs comes Cari Mora, a new story of evil, greed and the consequences of dark obsession.

Cari Mora is to be Thomas Harris’s sixth novel, and the long-awaited return of an American master.

Monsters lurk in the crevices between male desire and female survival. No other writer in the last century has conjured those monsters with more terrifying brilliance than Thomas Harris.

Twenty-five million dollars in cartel gold lies hidden beneath a mansion on the Miami Beach waterfront. Ruthless men have tracked it for years. Leading the pack is Hans-Peter Schneider. Driven by unspeakable appetites, he makes a living fleshing out the violent fantasies of other, richer men.

Cari Mora, caretaker of the house, has escaped from the violence in her native country. She stays in Miami on a wobbly Temporary Protected Status, subject to the iron whim of ICE. She works at many jobs to survive. Beautiful, marked by war, Cari catches the eye of Hans-Peter as he closes in on the treasure. But Cari Mora has surprising skills, and her will to survive has been tested before.

Jason Arthur, publisher of William Heinemann, Hutchinson and Windmill, says: ‘I’m thrilled to be publishing Cari Mora. There is no doubt in my mind that Thomas Harris remains one of the most notable writers of the last four decades, and the publication of his first novel in thirteen years – his first non-Hannibal novel in over forty – will be a significant publishing event. Hannibal Rising was the very first book I published when I joined William Heinemann back in 2006, and it was such a huge excitement for me as Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs ranked (and still rank) as two of my favourite thrillers of all time.’

Thomas Harris says: ‘I’m very pleased that Grand Central and Heinemann are publishing my new novel.’

About Thomas Harris: Thomas Harris is the author of five novels and may be best known for his character Hannibal Lecter. All of his books have been made into films, including most notably the multiple Oscar winner, The Silence of the Lambs. Harris began his writing career covering crime in the United States and Mexico, and was a reporter and editor at the Associated Press in New York

The new novel will be published by William Heinemann in hardback, ebook and audio on 16 May 2019 and in Arrow paperback in 2020.

Ebook editions of Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Hannibal Rising are available now for the very first time, and the backlist is being reissued on 21 March 2019.

With over 350 black-and-white illustrations, Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid offers readers a chance to see the Diary of a Wimpy Kid world in a whole new way. The book will be supported by an extensive global multifaceted publicity and marketing campaign.
