Penguin presents Shurjo’s Clan, Bangladeshi-American writer Iffat Nawaz’s debut novel

A coming-of-age novel based in the newly formed country, Bangladesh

Penguin Random House India announces the acquisition and publication of Bangladeshi-American writer Iffat Nawaz’s debut book, titled Shurjo’s Clan. Magic realism steeped in history, this literary fiction is a coming-of-age story of a girl growing up in a newly formed country, Bangladesh. The book is scheduled to release later in the year.

Riddled with the traumas of their past—death, war, migration, separation, the inability to belong to a land, dwelling in an in-between space, and an eternal limbo—Shurjo’s Clan, told through the eyes of a young protagonist, is a book that follows the journey of one family as they face several challenges and obstacles. Spanning decades, from the forced migration of Bengalis to East Pakistan in 1947, through the 1971 liberation war, the wave of immigrants to the West in the 1980s, and a final return, Iffat Nawaz’s novel is both a story of personal transitions and transformation as well as a chronicle of a country born into sorrow.

“A brave new voice. A deeply captivating saga. Shurjo’s Clan announces the arrival of an immensely talented and evocative writer.”, said renowned author Anees Salim.

Expressing her thoughts, Nawaz says, ‘The stories of Shurjo’s Clan were passed down to me as inheritance, from both my family and motherland. I carried them for decades before I could see the clearer and bigger picture. At first, I was a very attached inheritor of these second-hand experiences, but after approaching the novel from several different directions, I was able to detach slightly and tell the otherwise heavy story of war and migration while aspiring to turn it towards light. I believe certain tales of our broken pasts, of severed old nations and joyful yet grieving new ones, are ready to be rewritten for the present context so that we can shed certain limiting conditioning. I hope this new direction will be felt by the readers of my debut novel, and I have full trust in Penguin Random House to carry Shurjo’s Clan forward.’

Imaginative and compelling, Shurjo’s Clan merges magical realism with vivid historicity to paint an entirely contemporary portrait of how grief is inherited, and how the traumas and memories of our ancestors continue to shape those who come long after. Nawaz’s lyrical and evocative prose marks the arrival of a distinctive voice that unravels questions of mourning, belonging, identity, and family with delightful imaginativeness and devastating insight. With its mesmerizing balance between inexplicable otherworldliness and undeniable reality, this debut novel asks, above all, how can the past be honoured without letting its wounds destroy the present. The book is perfect not only for those who enjoy reading historical fiction but would also appeal to readers of the literary genre and have a taste for stories dealing with magical realism.

Elizabeth Kuruvilla, Executive Editor, Ebury Publishing and Vintage, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘Iffat Nawaz is an impressive new voice in fiction. This is a story of the subcontinent—the 1971 war and families torn apart as a new nation came into being, as also the haunting memories of the Partition—but it could well be the story of any people bearing the unrelenting scars of a conflict. Shurjo’s Clan is a deeply affecting novel, more so for the extraordinarily imaginative telling of grief that endures across generations.’

Milee Ashwarya, Publisher, Ebury Publishing and Vintage, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘Shurjo’s Clan marks the debut of a new and unique voice in the firmament of literary fiction. The characters are haunting, and the stories will stay with one for a long time. I am delighted and proud to publish Shurjo’s Clan and I hope it captivates the imagination of many readers across the globe.’

The literary biography of iconic Hindi writer Nirmal Verma, coming this September

Nirmal Verma was a pioneer of the Nai Kahani movement in Hindi Literature

Penguin Random House India announces the acquisition and publication of Here and Hereafter: Nirmal Verma’s Life in Literature by debut writer Vineet Gill. The book delves into the life of one of Hindi literature’s pioneers, Nirmal Verma, and opens a window into his writing style and his sensibilities. The book is scheduled to release in September from the Vintage imprint.

In this book, Gill looks at the scattered elements of Verma’s life as ingredients that went into the making of the writer. The places he lived in, the people he knew, and the books he read are all reflected, in Gill’s view, in Verma’s stories and novels. This is a work of intense analysis and considered excavation—a contemplation on Verma’s oeuvre and its place in world literature. Through this book, readers will get an insider’s look into the life of an eminent writer.

Commenting on the book, the author Vineet Gill, says, ‘It took me three years to finish writing this book, and most of that time was spent trying to find a form, an approach, suitable for my purposes. I didn’t want to write a conventional biography but still wanted to engage with aspects of Nirmal Verma’s life that shed some kind of light on his work.’

He also talked about the motivation behind writing this book, ‘I wanted to look at Nirmal Verma as a cosmopolitan writer who was not confined to Hindi or “Indian” tradition. I wanted to highlight his achievements as a reader, essayist, and critic. I wanted to view his work in relation to that of his forebears and contemporaries, and to the politics of his time. And finally, I wanted to create a personal record of sorts—about my own life as a reader and writer, and about how reading can lead to writing. I hope I have managed to bring together these disparate strands in my book.’

Elizabeth Kuruvilla, Executive Editor, Ebury Publishing and Vintage, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘In his book Here and Hereafter, Vineet Gill writes, “I am excited by this idea of reading as a form of biographical excavation.” This is precisely what makes this book unputdownable and one of a kind. What Vineet has done is read—and investigate—the clues to his life that Nirmal Verma has left behind in his works, giving us a truly unique perspective on a man who contributed tremendously to the world of words and ideas.’

Milee Ashwarya, Publisher, Ebury Publishing and Vintage, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘A writer’s work is inseparable from his life, experiences, and influences. In Here and Hereafter, Vineet Gill tries to unravel the making of Nirmal Verma as a writer through his novels, stories, essays, and critiques but also through the books he read and the social milieu he lived in. I am proud to publish this literary masterpiece, and I hope it finds readers across the world.’

About the author:

Vineet Gill is a writer and editor. His essays, often literary-critical in nature and occasionally personal, have appeared in various Indian and international publications. He has spent the better part of the previous decade trying to read and write and trying to build a life around those two interrelated pursuits. This is his first book.

Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk’s new novel comes out this September

Penguin Random House India is proud to announce the publication of  Turkish novelist and Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk’s new work of fiction, Nights of Plague. Scheduled to release in September under the Hamish Hamilton imprint, this book is a historical novel with events that takes place in 1901 during the third plague pandemic on a fictional Ottoman island. It is currently available for pre-order on all leading online book-selling platforms.

1901. Night Draws in. With the stealth of a spy vessel, the royal ship Aziziye approaches the famous vistas of Mingheria, ‘an emerald built of pink stone’. The twenty-ninth state of the ailing Ottoman Empire.

The ship carries Princess Pakize, the daughter of a deposed sultan, her doctor husband, and the Royal Chemist, Bonkowski Pasha. Each of them holds a separate mission. Not all of them will survive the weeks ahead. Because Mingheria is on the cusp of catastrophe. There are rumours of plague —rumours some in power will try to suppress.

But plague is not the only killer.

Soon, the eyes of the world will turn to this ancient island, where the future of a fragile empire is at stake, in an epic and playful mystery of passion, fear, scandal and murder, from one of history’s master storytellers.

Commenting on his book, Orhan Pamuk says, ‘The 19th Century European novel has an Eastward movement from London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, to St. Petersburg. In my novel Nights of Plague, however, the action moves in a sphere that is much more Southern, and from East to West: Hong Kong, Beijing, Bombay, Alexandria, Istanbul, Crete and Venice. Indian readers will notice and enjoy this new novelistic demographic and the warmer setting.’

Meru Gokhale, Publisher, Penguin Press, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘Orhan Pamuk’s new novel is a masterpiece. In this part detective story and part historical fiction, Pamuk has created an imaginary world plagued by an outbreak, not very different from the one we are living in today – except he has been working on this novel for more than four years. The drawings and hand-drawn maps in the book add texture to its thrilling universe, and I cannot be more thrilled to be publishing this in September 2022.’

About the author:

Orhan Pamuk is the author of ten novels, the memoir Istanbul and three works of non-fiction, and is the winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy praised Pamuk, ‘who in the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures’. One of Europe’s most prominent novelists, his work has been translated into over sixty languages.

Announcing a trailblazing new book on securing our natural capital.

We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of a groundbreaking book on environment conservation, titled The Case for Nature. Written by Siddarth Shrikanth, a climate investment professional, author, consultant, and entrepreneur, this book is due to release in 2023 under the Allen Lane imprint of Penguin.

At a time when global heating has grown from a far-off worry to a full-on public emergency, The Case for Nature brings innovative and practical ideas to regenerate our precious planet by harnessing the power of nature. Optimistic, practical, and deeply informed, this book clarifies and illuminates concepts from carbon credits to ecosystem services that underpin the new landscape and highlights the exciting innovations in business, finance, and policy that are helping turn the tide.

Talking about the book, the author Siddarth Shrikanth, says, ‘At its core are a set of ideas and recent developments that led me to believe that protecting and restoring nature is both the right thing to do, and firmly in our economic interests; that nature needs to be bound closely to our societies, taking a cue from a range of indigenous worldviews, rather than set apart from us and admired from afar, as old-style conservation would have us do; that there are real, tangible examples, in virtually every ecosystem on earth, where pioneers are bringing the case for nature to life in inventive ways. India, with its unique natural ecosystems, complex local dynamics, and competing priorities, features prominently in the book. I’m so pleased to be able to highlight these stories through The Case for Nature in the months to come.’

In addition to being particularly relevant to Indian readers, this book will also delight them with stories from across our wondrous living planet. Readers will be transported from the jungles of Indonesia, to the grasslands of Kenya and the reefs of Micronesia, and leave with the tools they will forge a new relationship with nature, steer clear of greenwashing, and make meaningful contributions in their professional and personal lives.

Manasi Subramaniam, Associate Publisher and Head of Rights, Penguin Press, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘I found Siddarth Shrikanth’s proposal absolutely extraordinary, both ambitious and compassionate, the voice both measured and vehement. He makes a sharp critique, but he offers both solutions and hope for the planet. This is a true book of ideas, and in many ways, I think it has the potential to be one of the most explosive books of the next few years.’

Originally written in Bengali, here comes the first English translation of Srijato’s ‘The House of Rain and Snow’

We are delighted to announce the acquisition of the English translation of The House of Rain and Snow by well-known author Srijato. This brilliant work of fiction will be translated from Bengali by Maharghya Chakraborty, and it is scheduled to get released in October 2023 under Penguin’s Vintage imprint.

The House of Rain and Snow follows the extraordinary journey of a boy, Pushkar, who must confront the one true secret of his life. His love for composing poems brings him closer to a girl, the sole reader of his poems, who also falls in love with him. Despite having two close friends and a family, Puskar often finds himself alone as he carries secrets that no one can know. He pours all his feelings into the roots of the old devil’s tree. The tree never responds of course, but its silent audience always manages to share some of the load. Even after failing to make any headway reading Proust, Puskar finds life opening a brand-new set of doors for him. It brings with it an opportunity to publish his first book of poetry. It leads Pushkar to eventually confront a truly secret equation of life: the change made possible by the transformative power of love.

Srijato’s book is a testament to an era, a witness to an astounding journey. Above and beyond all else, this book is about love and relationships.

Talking about the translation of his book, author Srijato says, ‘As a reader, my connection with Penguin dates to my childhood. As an author, this would be the first. It brings me enormous pride and happiness to be enlisted in their esteemed catalogue. This novel is very close to my heart as it has many of my memories attached. I look forward to a long and prosperous collaboration with Penguin.’

Maharghya Chakraborty, the translator of the book, adds, ‘This is an entirely new territory for me—translating fiction. The fact that I’m taking this leap via Srijato’s book makes this book even more momentous for me as a translator. I cherish the faith that the team at Penguin has in my ability to do justice to such a remarkable story.’

Premanka Goswami, Associate Publisher, Ebury Publishing and Vintage, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘Srijato’s writings—novels and poems—are adored by his readers. An amazingly brilliant lyricist, Srijato, with his words, creates a cityscape, which is imaginary, magical and real. We were mesmerized by the sheer beauty of his literary works and are thrilled to have him on board and sincerely hope that The House of Rain and Snow will find a wider readership.’

Milee Ashwarya, Publisher, Ebury Publishing and Vintage, Penguin Random House India, says, ‘There is a renewed interest in translations from regional languages in India. The House of Rain and Snow by Srijato is a much-loved work, and I am delighted Maharghya Chakraborty will be translating it for the English-speaking audience. I warmly welcome them to Penguin Random House India.’

The first ever comprehensive biography of President Draupadi Murmu is almost here!

Penguin Random House India is proud to announce the commissioning of the first-ever comprehensive biography of President Draupadi Murmu by senior journalist Sandeep Sahu. Titled Madam President: A Biography of Draupadi Murmu, the book is poised to open a window to the life of India’s first woman tribal President and is scheduled to be released in late 2022.

Draupdi Murmu’s long and eventful political journey is a story of true awe, perseverance, and inspiration. The first authentic and definitive account of the 15th President of India, Madam President will unpack the many trials and tribulations, and early years of struggle that made her the well-revered leader she is today. Starting as a Councillor in the Rairangpur civic body and culminating at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, this promises to be a compelling read; more so, because this biography is the first authentic and definitive account of her political career. The grace and fortitude with which she has conducted her public life, all through her career, despite being struck by a series of tragedies in her personal life such as the loss of her husband and two sons in quick succession, make her a resilient woman of resolve. He life’s work, through this book, will reach diverse audiences, far and wide, influencing many to dream their dreams and realise it.

President Murmu’s phenomenal rise from a sleepy village in the predominantly tribal Mayurbhanj district of Odisha to the Rashtrapati Bhavan presents a fascinating study of democratic empowerment in India. She is the first tribal to occupy the highest office in the country. With a stellar record as a legislator and with multiple awards for her work formerly as Legislator, Minister, and Governor, she has several firsts to her credit. She was the first woman from her area to become a minister in the Odisha government. She was made a minister of state in the first BJD-BJP alliance government, headed by Naveen Patnaik in 2000, after winning her very first election as a BJP candidate from Rairangpur. She was the first woman legislator to win the coveted Nilakantha Award as the Best Legislator in Odisha Assembly. She was the first woman–and the first tribal–Governor of Jharkhand. And now the first tribal woman to become the President of India.

Sandeep Sahu, the author of the book, says, ‘What made the prospect of doing the book when Penguin India reached out to me was the fact that the book would be on the first tribal woman to become the President of India, which is truly historic. That she belongs to the predominantly tribal Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, where I spent my entire adolescent period, was also another tempting factor to take it on. It has been an absolute pleasure working with my editor Chirag Thakkar and the Penguin India team, who have been very supportive and helpful to get this moving.’

The Commissioning Editor for the book, Chirag Thakkar, says, ‘Here is a story of the great democratic spirit of India. In many ways, this was, in fact, long overdue. At a time so critical for the protection of India’s indigenous communities, their culture, land rights, society, history and autonomy, President Murmu’s election to the highest office, we hope, will be a monumental steppingstone for many scheduled tribe communities of India. Sandeep brings with him the kind of situated knowledge and the skills of a storyteller that are quite unmatched. It has been a pleasure working with him on this incredible story of a leader who will inspire generations to come in ways President Kalam did.’

Meru Gokhale, Publisher, Penguin Press, Penguin Random House India says, ‘This is the story of an inspirational woman, a tribal leader, who has been a Stateswoman with a solid political career behind her. Yet, we know little about her life. Her ascension to the national stage as a role model for all Indians, occupying the highest office in the country, is a powerful message for India’s tribal communities. We are proud to be publishing the first-ever comprehensive biography of President Murmu.’
