Shark Tank fan? We’re publishing Namita Thapar’s debut book!

A book about balancing the shark and the dolphin within you

Penguin Random House India announces the acquisition and publication of The Dolphin and the Shark: Stories on Entrepreneurship by Namita Thapar. Namita is one of India’s leading businesswomen and the Executive Director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals, a fast-growing Indian multinational pharmaceutical company. She was also one of the “shark” investors on Sony TV’s popular business reality show Shark Tank India. The book is due to release in August under Penguin’s business imprint Penguin Portfolio.

The Dolphin and the Shark: Stories on Entrepreneurship is a result of Namita’s years of experience in navigating different roles in her flourishing career. From investing in start-ups, mentoring many budding women professionals to being a part of the senior team running a pharma company, this book has lessons from all facets of an entrepreneurial journey, and it is for anyone looking for drive and direction for their entrepreneurial ambitions.

Talking about the experience of writing her own book, the author, Namita, says, ‘Writing my very first book, in my own words, straight from my heart has been one of the most memorable and gratifying experiences of my life. The book is not meant to be preachy but rather full of candid stories that I hope will inspire many to push their limits!’

Namita Thapar’s debut book expounds on the concepts of the age-old aggressor leader role – the shark – and the more empathetic style of leadership which is represented by the dolphin. Sectioned to address different focus points of starting your own business with anecdotes and advice, this book will help in perfecting your pitch, planning your investment, building your network, understanding the importance of the culture of dissent, women leaders breaking barriers, and the role of mentors. Interviews with business pioneers further add value to these entrepreneurship lessons.

Ever since I first met her, she has surprised me with her sheer commitment to the writing process and is an enterprising and consistently inspiring force. Not too long until we publish the first definitive biography of India’s former Defence Minister.

Penguin Random House India is proud to announce the publication of The Life and Times of George Fernandes, which is going to be the first comprehensive biography of George Fernandes. Written by Rahul Ramagundam, the book is going to release on 25 July under the Allen Lane imprint. The book is currently available for pre-order on all major e-commerce websites.

The Life and Times of George Fernandes is the story of the firebrand trade union leader, socialist politician and incredible orator, told like never before. Comprehensive and unputdownable, this title will take readers through the life and works of George: from the streets of Bombay to the corridors of power in Delhi. Rahul Ramagundam opens a window to the story of the man, who was popularly known for leading the All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF) in May 1974 and calling upon its approximately 1.7 million employees to strike, which brought India to a halt for twenty days. This and many such stories from George’s life and the causes he so passionately believed in will come to light in this book.

Commenting on his experience writing this book, Rahul Ramagundam says, ‘For twelve long years, I have lived in George’s mind, explored his soul, and interrogated his choices, journeyed with him through his highs and lows. Just as he did in pursuit of his politics, I have staked many things, family and friendships, job and joys, in writing this biography. I have spent weeks sifting through papers in padlocked archives, brushing off mounds of dust left by families of termites. I have peered at microfilms of newspapers on dim-lit screens of time-worn machines. His private collection of more than a hundred thousand papers prodded a kind of historian’s greed in me. The delirious tedium of making a story out of those disparate papers strangely never tired me out. Thanks to the nurturing staff at Penguin, the book is finally out in the world.’

In this fascinating biography, Rahul Ramagundam traces the course of the Socialist Party in India: from its inception in the 1930s to its dissolution into the Janata Party in the late 1970s. It is a must-have for not only those who are interested to know more about Fernandes but also those who are curious about history and read different accounts of the situations that changed the course of this nation.

Premanka Goswami, Associate Publisher, Penguin Random House India, said, ‘George Fernandes’s life and politics fascinated people across the spectrum.  His commitment to fight for the rights of the working-class people; his role during the Emergency; and his “obsession” to defeat the all-powerful Congress party from its dominant position in India’s politics finds a characteristic expression in this book.  We’re excited to publish it from Penguin India.’

Meru Gokhale, Publisher, Penguin Press, Penguin Random House India, said, ‘George Fernandes was one of the most enigmatic politicians of contemporary India. With almost five decades as a Member of Parliament, his journey as a politician and rebel is fascinating. From being a trade union leader in the 1970s to India’s Defence Minister in the NDA Government, George Fernandes gave a new dimension to the socialist political movement in India.  Rahul Ramagundam’s biography of him is as much an important political document as it is a riveting read. We are delighted to be its publishers.’

About the author

Rahul Ramagundam was born into a family of freedom fighters in Bihar. His first influences were his grandparents from both sides. He was educated in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and then undivided Andhra Pradesh, and received his doctoral degree in Modern Indian History at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). While at JNU, he was simultaneously associated with a grassroots movement in the united Madhya Pradesh for many years. Presently, he teaches at a Delhi-based university and wages a fierce everyday struggle to read, research and write.

Rahul’s many books include Gandhi’s Khadi (2008) and Including the Socially Excluded (2017).

Heads up! We’re publishing the biography of Agyeya by award-winning author Akshaya Mukul.

Penguin Random House India announces the acquisition and publication of multiple award-winning author, Akshaya Mukul’s Writer, Rebel, Soldier, Lover: The Many Lives of Agyeya. The story of one of the most brilliant personalities of Indian literature is coming out in the English language in July 2022 under the Vintage imprint and is currently available on all major e-commerce websites on preorder. Its Hindi language translation, slated for 2023, will be published under the Hind Pocket Books imprint.

Akshaya Mukul’s book about Sachchidanand Hirananda Vatsyayan, or ‘Agyeya’ as he was more popularly known, is comprehensive and bold. Based on never-before-seen archival research—including a mammoth trove of private papers, documents of the CIA-funded Congress for Cultural Freedom, and colonial records of his years in jail—readers can prepare to be captivated by the biography. Through this life story, we also get a rare peek into the history of the Hindi literary world of the twentieth century and the factionalism, squabbling, pettiness and ambition found in it.

Commenting on the book, author Akshaya Mukul said, ‘’In Writer, Rebel, Soldier, Lover: The Many Lives of Agyeya, I have attempted to take an unflinching view of Agyeya’s public, private and secret lives. Excavated from a massive archive of previously unseen private papers and other fresh material sourced from Delhi, New York, Chicago, and Stanford University, his story features genius writers, mad poets, literary fixers, and secret lovers. It is the literary history of Hindi from colonial times to Nehruvian India and beyond. Agyeya’s civilisational enterprise and the Hindi world’s factional fights are as thrilling as the times he lived in. It is a satisfying symmetry that Penguin Random House India, publishers of Shekhar: Ek Jiwani in translation and Prison Days and Other Poems, will be the home of this biography. I am happy to be working with Elizabeth Kuruvilla, Vineet Gill, and the entire team, which embraced the book with so much love.’

Writer, Rebel, Soldier, Lover is the story of Agyeya’s journey from being a revolutionary youth to becoming a (highly controversial) patron-saint of Hindi literature. This story spans landscapes stretching from British jails, an intellectually robust Allahabad and modern-day Delhi to monasteries in Europe, the homes of Agyeya’s friends in the Himalayas, and universities in the US.

Elizabeth Kuruvilla, Executive Editor, Ebury Publishing & Vintage, Penguin Random House India, said, ‘When Akshaya Mukul has a book, you know you have to read it. Impeccably researched, written with an elegance that never carries the weight of the research, and always a page-turner. Writer, Rebel, Soldier, Lover is about Agyeya, of course—and a more fascinating subject for a biographer may be hard to find—but it is also an incredibly intimate view of the people around him, and in particular of the Hindi literary establishment. We are proud to be publishing this book.’

Milee Ashwarya, Publisher, Ebury Publishing & Vintage, Penguin Random House India, said, ‘I have been an admirer of Akshay Mukul’s writings and have been eagerly waiting for his next work. Now that Writer, Rebel, Soldier, Lover will be soon published I am delighted that readers too will be able to enjoy and engage with this special book that unravels the life and times of Agyeya. It is a must read.’

Mukul is the recipient of the Homi Bhabha, Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund and the New India Foundation fellowships. He has contributed essays to Keywords for India: A Conceptual Lexicon for the 21st Century, edited by Rukmini Bhaya Nair and Peter Ronald deSouza, and A Functioning Anarchy?: Essays for Ramachandra Guha, edited by Srinath Raghavan and Nandini Sundar.
